Dogs for Children? Which Ones Are The Top Dogs?
by Dr. Mayra Alfonso

What is so great about having a dog? Well, dog lovers have the answer to this question. Not dog lovers are always wondering about it. For all dog lovers having a little fur ball running around the house and discovering all those new tricks that there are to learn is a lot of fun. Dog lovers also know what with the fun comes tons of responsibilities. Picking the right pet that is a dog good for children is a must.
When choosing a breed to bring to your household, there are many factors you need to take into consideration. What kind of dog do you want? Do you want a friendly dog, or an aggressive dog? Do you want a dog that likes children, or one that don't? There are unfortunate stories of dogs that have attacked family members, including children, and this definitively could be avoided if you choose one of the pets that is known to be a dog good for families.

What is the most critical question a potential dog owner can ask him or herself when considering bringing a dog home? The answer depends on is there are children in the house or not, or if there are plans of having children in the future. If the potential pet owner believe that there will be children in the house in the future, it is important then to consider bringing home a dog good with kids.

One of the most well known family dogs out there is the Labrador retriever. The lab as many called it is a very good natured dog, and in overall have a very good disposition. This breed likes to play and they need a great deal of exercise in order to avoid boredom. This dog tends to be very good with children, and have tons of patience when it comes to the young ones. The Labrador retriever loves to please people and they enjoy being petted and care for. If not enough exercise is provided they could cause some destruction around the house.

The Golden retriever is another dog that is great for the family. This dog is also a big dog, and just like the Labrador retriever is gentle in nature, kind and well mannered. They love to be around people and also need to be exercised to avoid boredom. They are friendly with other dogs and cats, and in overall have a great disposition. One thing to keep in mind when choosing a Golden retriever is that they need to be groom, due to their long hair. A golden retriever is the perfect companion for children and people who are outdoor enthusiasts.

The beagle is another dog that is ideal as a family dog. The beagle is smaller than the Golden retriever and that the Labrador retriever, therefore it is a better option for homes with smaller children. The beagle is a good watch dog because of their wailing bark. So, if you are looking for a good watch dog with is also good with children consider a beagle. They are not aggressive and tend to be very friendly and can be very submissive. They get bored easily so they will need a fair amount of play time and exercise.

Remember that not two dogs are alike, even if they belong to the same breed. You have to be cautious when selecting which dogs you want around your child. This is why doing your diligent search to find out which breed are child friendly and that won't harm you child is very critical to a home with young kids or with the potential of having young kids around. Choosing a dog good with children ensures that you will have a safe and loyal family dog.

Cat Talk, what Are They Saying?
by Steve Peters

The Purr: Cats (big and small) are the only animals that purr. Why? Purring actually comes from two membrane folds, rather than being voice generated. called false vocal cords that are situated in the larynx behind the actual vocal cords. Cats can make purring noises while both inhaling and exhaling. with their mouths completely closed.Scientists think purring is produced by blood in a large vein in the chest cavity that vibrates and is then magnified by air in the windpipe.
For kittens(who are deaf and blind), the vibration of their mother's purring can be felt, acting as a homing device, a signal for them to nurse. Cats don't purr just for pleasure; a deep one can also indicate pain or distress.

The Meow: There are lots of variations: a short, soft-spoken "mew" is your cat's way of saying "hello", Are you feeling good today?A loud and drawn-out "meo-o-o-o-ow" is a demand for food or attention.

The Ears: There are 5 fundamental ear indications. If they point forward and slightly outward, then every thing's cool. If the ears are erect and facing forward, they're wide awake and my explore the source of something it hears. If the ears are twitching nervously back and forth, they're agitated or anxious.

The Tail: A tail waving quietly from side to side is a sign of contentment or concentrating intently on something. If accompanied with growls, take care! If tail-wagging is somewhere between heavy-duty and half-hearted, this may indicate that your cat is not sure of things. If the tail is leaning forward over the head and looking fluffed up, it means your cat is feeling like the top banana

The Eyes: When your cat looks steadily at you, giving you several long, slow blinks, it's your cat's version of a kiss! Blink back at kitty the same way! If you get on the same level and speak to your cat while sitting on the floor, it will immediately make your cat feel more comfortable.

The Whiskers: They're one of your cat's most delicate sense organs. By bending the whiskers, kitty can magnify the smallest air disturbance.

How We Care For Our Pets
by Joseph M Sabol

We all agree that our pets, especially dogs and cats, are members of our family. We talk to them, play with them, sleep with them and include them in almost everything we do. As members of our family, or our "four-legged children", we do everything we can to make sure they are happy and healthy.
As pet owners, we have different ways of showing our love for our pets. Some people take their pets with them everywhere they go. I have seen dogs on vacation with their families, including camping and at the Jersey Shore. Motels, hotels, and other vacation destinations have become increasingly pet friendly.

Some pet owners pamper their pets with expensive doggie outfits or jewel encrusted kitty collars. I have seen homes with entire rooms specially equipped with cat climbing and scratching structures and I have heard of people giving up their own beds because they can't kick the dog out!

I live with 3 Dobermans and they have their own furniture to lounge on, all the bones and toys they could wish for, and all the love and attention they want. We make sure they always make their routine vet appointments, and another way we show our love and concern for our 3 dogs, is to provide them with the best quality, premium dog food and treats. If we did not love or care about them as much as we do, we would feed them the cheapest dog food and give them table scraps. Because our pets are completely dependent upon us, taking care of their nutritional and health needs is the best way we can care for them to insure a long and active life.

Pet nutrition has come a long way over the years. Now pet foods are formulated to address specific needs of our pets during different stages of their lives. A great way to supplement your pets nutritional needs, is to give them a high quality, all natural pet vitamin. It has been shown that the nutrients provided by a human grade pet vitamin can fight cancer causing free radicals, improve the skin and coat, strengthen and help rebuild the cartilage and provide over all support to your pets immune system.

I know of a case of a 9 month old puppy whom the owners thought had been immunized, that got parvovirus. The parvovirus is usually deadly and is a slow and painful death. This puppy was able to not only survive, but to completely regain her health and puppy energy. Her owner had been giving her a quality, all natural pet vitamin since she was 8 weeks old. This gave her immune system the boost it needed to fight off the virus and recover completely. After talking to the owner of this pup, and hearing her story, I started my 3 Dobermans on the best all natural pet vitamin I could find. You may want to do the same for your pets.

Cat Health and Fleas - What Harm Can Fleas Do to Your Cat?
By Ann Wong

With the responsibility of keeping a cat, comes the added task of ensuring that they are flea free. Fleas is a problem that all cat owners would have to deal with at one time or another. Ask any cat owners and I'm sure you would get a same answer from all of them and that is, getting rid of fleas on cats is not an easy task. It requires an enormous amount of effort and time to eradicate these pesky little creatures once they come into contact with your cat. What's worse is that not only are fleas a nuisance, they are also the cause of many health problems that we see in cats.

The most common cat fleas health hazards that we see is flea allergic dermatitis or what's commonly known as FAD. This is a skin disorder caused by an allergic reaction to an allergen found in the saliva of fleas. When fleas bite on the cat for a blood meal, it secrets saliva. The allergen in the fleas' saliva will result in pruritus (intense itch) causing the cat to scratch and lick itself excessively. This in turn lead to hair loss and raw and inflamed skin due to the constant non-stop scratching and licking. Affected cat will feel miserable and their appetite will tend to be affected leading to weight loss.

Tapeworms infestation is another health concern brought about by fleas. Cats groom themselves by licking their hair coat. While doing so, they may ingest a flea carrying tapeworms larva and the cat get infected as a result. You can easily tell if your cat is having tapeworms by checking its anus. Chances are that you would be able to detect the presence of what look like rice grain segments of the tapeworms. Though tapeworms would not cause any major health issue in cats, their presence in the guts of cats may hinder the proper absorption of nutrients resulting in malnutrition and weight loss. This is especially so when a cat is heavily infested with tapeworms.

Fleas may also cause anemia in cats. They feed on the blood of cats. Though one flea will only feed on a minute quantity each time, the combined quantity by hundreds of fleas living off the poor cat can be considerable especially in young and immature kittens.

Feline Anemia Infection or FIA is another parasitic infection caused by fleas. Fleas are carriers of the blood parasite call Haemobartonella felis that can cause rupturing of red blood cells in cats. This again may cause anemia in cats resulting in death if severe and not treated.
The only way you can protect your cats from these dreadful diseases is to have a proper flea control for cats. How To Treat Cat Fleas will show you how you can eradicate these pesky creatures before any harm caused. Get to know the right products to use and how to use them to keep your cat flea free

To prevent flea re-infestation, it's not sufficient to just treat your cat, the surrounding environment need to be treated as well. House Flea Control is where you will get step-by-step instructions on how you can effectively get rid of fleas in your house both indoor and outdoor.

General Care for the Freshwater Aquarium
by Jeanie Smith

Okay, so you have decided that you want to own an aquarium. It is a good idea to make out a wish list before purchasing any fish for the aquarium. Keeping an aquarium will require patience. Unfortunately, it is not realistic to go the pet store and just start picking out fish. Take a trip to the pet store in order to gather information and window shop to determine the types of fish you wish to keep in your aquarium. Carefully research these fish to ensure that they are compatible for water temperatures and P.H., as well as the food that they eat. Be careful not to put prey and predator together in the same tank. Keep in mind that freshwater fish are hardier than the marine variety, and will be less susceptible to water fluctuations.
One reason that freshwater fish are hardier than saltwater fish is the saltwater itself. Just like any living creature, a fish's body requires water in order to function properly. Water is absorbed through a fish's skin in the freshwater environment. Alternatively, a saltwater fish actually has to drink the salt water, because the body fluids are extracted through the skin by osmosis. The salt is then excreted in the form of highly concentrated urine. Freshwater fish are a good choice for an inexperienced aquarium owner because there is more wiggle room in the water specifications. Some freshwater fish have a variation of as much as ten degrees of acceptable water temperature. Conversely, most tropical fish will only allow about two degrees of variation in water temperature It is not uncommon for the novice fish keeper to become easily discouraged. Water conditions are hard to regulate and unfortunately fish, even the freshwater variety, are not the hardiest of creatures. Sometimes they do not survive these fluctuations. It is important to be patient. An aquarium needs to run for a minimum of twenty four hours before adding any fish at all. You may want to allow the tank to run and filter with decorations and any plant life for a few days before introducing the fish. Be sure to clean the decorations and any substrate thoroughly before adding them to the aquarium. Live plants are highly recommended in new aquariums as they will help to generate the good bacteria necessary to reduce the amount of ammonia in the tank. It is a good idea to test the ammonia and nitrite levels before adding fish to the aquarium. Begin by adding only three to four small fish. A general rule is to wait another thirty days before adding additional fish, because that is the incubation period for most fish illnesses. In addition, test the nitrite and ammonia levels before adding these additional fish. The ammonia levels should return to zero. This also takes about a month.

There are a few basic tips that will keep fish healthy. Don't over feed the fish. Any excess food will become debris in the tank, and then turns into ammonia, which is toxic to fish. Change the water in the aquarium regularly. Replace approximately one third of the water in the tank every two to three weeks. This will minimize the disruption to the fish in the aquarium, eliminating the need to remove the fish from the tank. Lastly, don't forget to clean the filter. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, as some filters need to be replaced more frequently than others

Cat food and water bowl
by jeya

Cats with free access to outdoors will potentially have a full and natural lifestyle. The constantly changing outside world will provide all the mental and physical stimulation required to keep the individual healthy, both physically and mentally. A cat needs to be neutered or fixed if you do not your cat wandering off and getting into trouble or in a females case, having kittens.
A cat will want its own special food bowl. One way to distinguish which cats bowl it is can be perhaps by having a different colored bowl for each one of your cats. The water bowl and the food dish that you use to serve up your cats meals should be acceptable to him or else your cat may decide not to feed there. Also, it is important that the bowls you use do not scratch easily. There are some low cost feeding bowls that can dent easily if a cat scratches it hard enough and these little gashes can attract bacteria and food particles, which might make your cat sick. This means that your best investment will be high impact plastic dishes.

The black and white dish has "Woof" printed on the front and is accented with an enameled paw charm. Now the food will look as good as it tastes! Pet food and water dishes are available in virtually all shapes and sizes, and typically present a common problem for the pet caretakers they become soiled and are very undesirable to clean once in that condition.

These durable, deep dish plastic cat face food bowls include non-skid feet to eliminate the "scoot and spill" factor during your pet's mealtime. They're dishwasher safe and come in both single and double compartments. Treat your precious kitty with delicious food in our Cat Face Feeding Dish. This feeding dish has the face of an adorable feline and ears that stick out too.

How to Your Protect Dogs From Canine Cancer
by Heidi Jeter

Cancer not only affects humans. In fact, it's among the leading causes of death in pets, especially dogs. According to Parade magazine, half of all dogs will develop cancer during their lifetime.
So how can you protect your dog from cancer? Interestingly, in many of the same ways you can protect yourself. Like humans, dogs and other pets can develop cancer from exposure to all of the following:

Smoke Sunlight Radiation Hormones Chemicals Immune System Failure Viruses

Canine cancers are the most common. With over 100 varieties, canine cancer is the most prevalent among all domesticated pet species. In fact, according to the Canine Cancer Campaign, a non-profit organization focused on curing canine cancer, one in four dogs will die from the effects of cancer.

Many dog breeds even carry hereditary risk factors. Golden retrievers are at high risk for Lymphoma and cancers of the blood vessels and spleen. Retrievers are susceptible to Transitional Cell Carcinoma and Melanoma (skin/mouth) cancers. Boxers have been known to inherit Lymphoma and brain cancers. See which dog breeds are at risk for certain cancers.

Despite the many risk factors facing your dog, there's a lot you can do to help make sure they stay cancer free. Below are five critical steps you can take to protect your pets from cancer.

Visit the Vet: Make sure you and your dog visit the veterinarian on a regular basis for cancer screenings and checkups. The sooner cancer is detected, the sooner it can be treated. This vastly improves the chances that your dog will beat the disease. Vets recommend a checkup every six months for dogs over 7. For younger dogs, an annual exam is a safe precautionary measure. The Canine Cancer Campaign and the Pet Cancer Foundation are now offering Free Cancer Consultations for pets.

Doggy Exercise: To stay healthy, dogs need regular exercise. Studies have shown that exercise strengthens immunity to a range of diseases, including cancer. In fact, overweight pets are twice as likely to develop cancer than their healthy counterparts.

Avoid Chemical Exposure: There are many known carcinogens that your dog interacts with everyday, but by keeping them away from herbicides, insecticides, and tobacco smoke, you can make sure they won't develop cancer from chemical exposure. Instead of using toxic house and garden products, choose non-toxic products and keep your pets away from secondhand smoke. Most importantly, don't use unnatural flea products on your pet, as many flea collars, sprays, and shampoos are full of poisons. Use natural, less-toxic methods of flea control. These include natural flea shampoos and frequent vacuuming. Pyrethins are a natural means of flea control.

Spay and Neuter Pets: Simply spaying or neutering your dog can decrease the risk of breast cancer in females to almost zero; the risk of testicular cancer is zero for neutered males.

Prevent Sunburn: While all dogs can get sunburned, short-haired and light-haired dogs carry a greater risk for developing skin cancers caused by overexposure to sunlight. Dogs need sunscreen just like their owners. Rub a bit on your dog's nose and ears.

Avoid Contaminated Water: Keep your pet from drinking stagnant water in street puddles, which can contain cancer-causing toxins. Change your pets water daily, and make sure the bowl is clean and fresh.

Remember, even if your dog is diagnosed with cancer, all is not lost. Many cancers can be cured if they're discovered early. There are many other options too, including:

Surgery Radiation Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Hyperthermia Cyrosurgery

Don't forget that if your pet already has cancer, you should avoid all vaccinations because they can stress your pet's immune system. Still, active prevention is the best defense. Follow the tips above to reduce the risk of your pets developing cancer during their lifetime, and you'll enjoy more time together.

How important is Pet Grooming for your pets
by Manish Chauhan

Caring for your pet entails more than having food and water. Take grooming; this is an area of pet care that often gets overlooked by many pet owners. Grooming can be easily ignored by many; however, there are really many benefits to it. Grooming can actually be an ounce of prevention for your pet. In the following paragraphs pet grooming tips are described.
Many pet owners have the concept that pets naturally do not like to be groomed. This concept is really not so. It is because of pet owners that lack in taking part with the grooming process. Naturally, when a pet is not use to be groomed, they are going to act as though they do not enjoy it.

Have you ever thought how much you would hate combing your hair if you only did it once or twice a year? Unwashed hair and fur gets snarled and are no fun to comb/brush through. If a pet is treated this way, then no wonder they do not care to be groomed...you wouldn't either.

Pets that are ungroomed or under groomed are much more likely to be plagued with parasites and problems. Grooming actually gives you the opportunity to explore your pet's skin to find irritations, sores, cuts, lumps, or signs of fleas. Catching any kind of a problem with your pet early will alleviate a major catastrophe.

We do often wonder how often enough is when it comes to grooming. This is almost impossible to answer definitely. For obvious reasons a long hair pet would need more grooming than a short hair pet. It is important that you know the grooming needs of your breed. Do some research to find out information what grooming requirements are needed for your breed.

Here are the top four grooming tips for pets.

Keep your pets nails trimmed.
Always brush or comb in the direction of the hair growth. Be sure to explore with all kinds of pet grooming supplies (combs and brushes). This way you can find out what works best with the fur style of your pet.
Check your pet's ears at least twice a month. The skin in the ears should be pink, odor-free, and free of crustiness and unidentifiable matter.
Brush your pet at least once a week and bathe your dog every two months. Cats should not need to be bathed unless they are especially dirty.
You may not think that regular grooming could contribute to the emotional bond between your pet and you. Regular grooming actually creates a bond of closeness and trust between pet and pet owner. Like a family member, make time for the regular grooming of your pet. Keep your pet well fed, properly exercised. Remember you are caring for a member of your family.
