Dog Training Career - Is It Right For You
by Ron B

We have hit a high in unemployment recently, and many are now looking for more rewarding careers. Becoming increasingly popular for many is a career in dog training.

A career in dog training should be given as much consideration as a career in the priesthood or medicine.

Some individuals may feel that a genuine love for dogs would be adequate to make it big in such a profession. However, this isn't true at all.

Here are 5 things that you should pose yourself before deciding on pursuing a pet training profession:

1. Are you a tolerant person? Pet training needs tolerance. Heaps and tons and tons of tolerance. Keep in mind that pets won't be able to grasp human speech. You will have to depend on associative methods to coach them certain skills and patterns. This will need a lot of struggles, and this will need a lot of time.

2. Are you a pet enthusiast? It'll be useless to even mull over a pet training profession if you aren't. Imagine an individual wanting to be a cook without any fervor for good cuisine. You should like dogs. At the very least, you should be interested with dogs.

3. Can you bear dogs? Can you withstand their stench? Can you bear the view of their feces? Will you be able to comprehend that some dogs aren't potty trained, and they can deposit a dump just about anywhere and often without forewarning?

4. Do you have fast impulse? Some dogs don't meet outsiders very well. They may scratch, or worse, sink teeth into unknown groups to protect themselves and shield their perceived territories. Sadly, a dog training vocation denotes that the dog handler will always be the outsider. Would you know what to do? Would you know how to behave when the dog suddenly becomes aggressive?

5. Are you in relentless need of approval? If you are, go join a singing competition. A dog training job is a trying occupation. Ask dog trainers who have consumed years, and some even decades, coaching dogs into well-behaved pets. The dogs will receive all the praise. pet trainers will often be relegated to the background, absolutely forgotten when their dog pupils display all the clever actions they have acquired.

A dog training profession isn't for all. However, it continues to be a rewarding vocation for anybody who has a delight for canines and an ability for all the requirements mentioned previously.

The Meaning Of Your Cats
by Jay Schindler

A lot of people think that cats work on their own agenda, not paying much attention to their owner - provided they have clean litter, food, and water. Cats can behave in odd manners at times, which can easily confuse their owners and make it really hard to determine what the cat wants. As much as cat behavior can be confusing, there are some ways that you can solve common cat behavior mysteries.

A common behavior that almost all cats do is push their heads into any type of object that will allow them to do it. You've probably seen your cat do this before, probably against table legs, TV stands, or another object. This can be noticed more when you have other people who own animals or those with allergies over at your house. When a cat notices this, he will rub his head against the person. In doing so, he will put a touch of saliva on the individual. In a cat's mind, he owns what he puts his saliva on.

By putting his saliva on something, that object or person will have a familiar scent. Although this can be very annoying, you have to understand that other people in your home are seen as odd or weird to your cat. When a cat does this, he is simply trying to make the visitor belong. When he brushes up against them and puts his saliva on them, he is trying to put his scent on them - which in his mind will mean that they belong in his territory.

Even though marking someone or something with saliva is beneficial to the cat, saliva is one of the most common forms of pet allergies. When someone wipes the saliva off of them, the scent will be gone and the cat will go back and attempt to do it again. Even though it may appear that cats target those with allergies, cats are actually just trying to make the visitor belong at the house. If the guest simply cannot take the saliva, allow the cat to rub himself on their pants leg a few times. Normally, this is all takes for a cat to leave the person alone.

Those of you who an indoor cat should expect the cat to spend quite a bit of time lying near windows. During this time, you may hear your cat make very strange noises or weird movements. You shouldn't fear though, as he is simply acting out his hunting instincts. Whether it's another cat or object outside moving about, the cat will see it and simply go into his native hunting instinct.

As most already know, cats love to play. They love to played with, especially with toys. They will pounce on things on occasion, which should always be expected. If you try to prevent this type of behavior, your cat will take a very negative approach and you'll end up with a lot of broken things in your home. You can always play with your cat using a string, as he will love to chase the string around the room.

The longer you own your cat, the more odd behavior you'll see him exhibit. Cats behave in strange ways, although they always have a reason for behaving the way they do. If you can understand why your cat behaves like he does, you'll have no problems keeping him healthy and happy. If you simply pay attention to your cat and the way he behaves at times - you'll be able to understand him better than ever before.

Help To Train Your Dog To Sit
by Jack Bingham

If you want to train your dog to 'sit' it might seem complicated and beyond you. What you should know is that this one of the key fundamental training skills that all responsible loving dog owners should make sure that their dogs know inside out. With this skill learned, the way is clear for dogs to be then trained in a whole host of other skills and really it is not a difficult skill for most dogs to learn. But if you can't afford to send your dog to traditional dog training classes, just how might you start to train your dog to sit and then further train your dog to do a whole load of other exercises? This article will give you advice on how you should go about how to train your dog to sit.
Step By Step Training

1) You first need a pocket full of your dogs favorite food treats ready in your pocket and out of sight of your dog.

2) Start your training in a room in your home that has few distractions and where you and your dog can concentrate on the training you are about to undertake.

3) You must make sure that you start all training when your dog is alert and you or your dog are not tired.

4) Call the dog by it's name and while the dog is in a standing position, show the dog one of the food treats.

5) Place the food treat just out of reach of the dog, in front of the dogs nose, so that the dogs nose is pointing upwards. The idea is to hold the food just out of reach of the dog, but not so far that the dog is jumping up to reach the food - that would be a fundamental mistake and you really want to avoid that.

6) Bring the food treat just over your dogs head, towards the back of him, so that he naturally lowers himself into a sitting position.

7) The second your dog naturally gets into the sit position, say the words "good dog" and simultaneously give your dog the food treat.

Pet Air Travel: Flying With Your Pet To Hawaii?
Author: Darlene Berkel

First of all, let me assure you that there are ways to fly with your pets cross country, and even out-of-country, without any damage. You can relax, well, at least a bit anyway. From the research we have done about pet travel and specifically about flying with pets, it seems that most pets are completely safe and unharmed while traveling by airplane.

Still not convinced? Then you should take a look at two great pet air travel websites: Petflight and PetAir. Pet flight is a great site about pet-friendly flights and safe shipping of your pets. It was inspired by a special dog named Brent. Brent and his "pet Dad" discuss how they moved to Hawaii from the USA and they provide invaluable air travel and flight information for flying with pets.

Be sure to read the Pet Travel Reports . Petflight provides monthly reports on the loss, injury, and death of pets during air travel. In addition, you will find great pet travel tips and hard-to-find airline information. We highly recommend Brent's website as a resource when planning to fly with your pets.

Pet Air is another great resource you could tap into. Pet Air has a 28 -year reputation for transporting animals safely. They deal with both wild as well as domesticated animals. We hope studying the information on these 2 websites and any others you may come across, will help to convince you that it should be perfectly safe to fly with pets IF you arm yourself with all the relevant information and use the right channels.

And if you really don't like the idea of the cargo hold for your "babies" then hiring a private jet might be the way to go!

Knowing all the rules of pet travel can be confusing since not all airlines allow pets to fly in the cabin. Do your research and contact the airlines directly for all relevant pet air travel information, since pet travel policies vary from airline to airline, and the different policies can be confusing.

Lots of pet travel information is available on the internet, so you can easily acquaint yourself with the rules of pet friendly travel. There are some basic rules that both you and the airlines must follow such as:

-your pet must be at least 8 weeks old and under 100 pounds

-your pet will not be allowed to be outside of its pet carrier

-non traditional pets are not allowed ( sorry, you'll have to leave your pet snake with his favorite sitter)

-you will need a health certificate from a vet that is no more than 10 days old if your animal will travel in the cargo hold.

These are just a few pet travel rules to keep in mind, but there are many more pet travel tips and resources to help make your pet travel experiences pleasurable for you, the airlines, and above all, for your beloved pet.

Is Your Dog Over Excited by Car Trips?
By Craig McPherson

The type of restlessness I am talking about is the excitability when the dog gets in the car. This can be caused by stress during the traveling or by someone working the dog up to this state by exciting the dog up for the drive.

Both problems can be deterred at an early age. When you start introducing your dog to travel, it is a good idea to sit the dog in the car first and calmly start the engine, reassuring the dog at all times.

This has to be done quietly and calmly to avoid the pup from getting too excited.

After a few minutes, get out of the car with your dog and praise the dog for doing well.

Leave it at that for a day or so, then next time, take the dog to the car. Then quietly place the dog in the car and do the same procedure again as the last. Food rewards will work really well with this problem.

Only this time take the dog for a short drive, reverse out and drive back in again. When you stop, allow yourself and the dog out quietly then praise if the dog was good. This is a classic way of desensitising your dog to be calm in the vehicle.

Go further and further every couple of days, if the dog gets excited quietly talk to the dog and reassure the animal. Then after a couple of weeks you can start taking your dog to destinations. HAVE FUN!

If you have an older dog with this problem already developed use the above technique, but the progress may be slower.

You may even sit in the car for long periods without even starting the engine.

Use food rewards to reward a quiet dog and ignore the bad behaviour. Read the slobbering section on this disk to read a bit more about vehicle desensitisation.

Dog obedience training and exercise will always be a positive step towards solving any dog behavioural problem.

If you are considering getting an exotic pet such as a toucan, there are many things that you need to know in order to be able to take the best care of your new exotic pet. You need to make sure that you are prepared will all the information to take care of your new member of the family.

Toucans are considered to be a tropical bird but can also be a great pet for your family to have. The first thing that you need to understand is that your toucan may be very pretty, but these are also very intelligent birds that can be taught a variety of tricks if you want to work with them. These types of birds can be a great companion for your family and are very playful pets. Bananas, berries, grapes, and papaya are great fruits to put as their diet for every day feedings. Fresh fruit is one of the most important parts of their diet and should always be on the menu. You should also consider avoiding fruits with a high citric acid content like lemons and oranges because they could end up hurting the digestive system of the toucan. Green Choices for Your Pets by Virginia Ginsburg
Copyright (c) 2008 Virginia Ginsburg

If you already purchase organic fruits and vegetables, avoid packaging, and recycle, then you are well on your way to living a green life. Chances are, the more you do, the more you realize that there are many things we can do as individuals to reduce our impact on the Earth. For example, have you considered the food you feed your pets?

Our dogs and cats are an important part of our lives. According to the Humane Society of the United States, 38.4 million (nearly 34 percent) American households own one or more cats, and about 43 million Americans own dogs. The care and feeding of pets varies from owners who dress their animals in frilly tutus to owners who do little more than grab a bag of food from the supermarket.

According to some estimates, Americans spend more than $40 billion on food for their pets in the United States. The variety of cat and dog food available ranges from inexpensive to ridiculous, but what is the real difference, and what do you need to know about your animal's care and the Planet?

First, before you make any changes to your pet's nutrition, check with your vet or an animal nutritionist to determine whether it has any special dietary needs. Your vet will be able to tell you if you need to avoid certain ingredients or ensure that your pet gets particular nutrients through its food.

Second, make sure that if you do decide to change your pet's diet, do so gradually. Most pets take a little bit of time to adjust to new flavors and mixes. Most veterinarians recommend mixing new food in with familiar food for one to two weeks, gradually increasing the proportion of new food vs. familiar food throughout that time period until you are up to 100% of the new food. If you follow this approach, your animal will be more likely to adapt to the new food.

According to the National Geographic Society, organic pet food is a better choice from an environmental standpoint than conventional pet food. This is based on similar reasons behind choosing organic foods for your human family.

Foods certified USDA Organic are produced without the use of petroleum-based pesticides and fertilizers. Additionally, they are based on meat not treated with antibiotics and growth hormones, both of which have been shown to pollute water sources like lakes, rivers and the ocean. Genetically modified organisms, which reduce biodiversity, are not used in Organic foods. Finally, Organic foods do not undergo irradiation to kill bacteria.

In addition to the basic need of food for your pet, other products that you may consider when going green include supplements, coat & fur products, flea & tick control, shampoos & conditioners, and treats.

Here are some key labels to look for when you are seeking green alternatives for your pets:

- USDA Certified Organic: this is the only official certification for organic products, assuring that the food has undergone a third-party certification process. Compared to products market "natural" or "holistic," this process validates that at least 95% of the ingredients are organic.

- Free-Range Meat: look for foods made from animals that are raised out-of-doors, without cages, and are fed grass and other natural diets.

- Cruelty-Free: look for items that feature no animal testing and can prove the animals raised for meat are treated in a humane manner.

- AAFCO Certification: this certification, provided by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) ensures the food is formulated to meet balanced nutritional levels and contain the micro- and macro-nutrients needed to keep your pets healthy.

There are many healthy, green options available on the market for dogs and cats, but as with any green product, it is important that you check the label and investigate the company to ensure that you fully understand the claims and certifications.
